'Agneepath' is a clean hit
It was predicted in this column last week that 'Agneepath' would enjoy opening collections in the range of 60 crores. The film's acceptance went as per the script, what with the Karan Johar production raking in over 62 crores at the box office in it's extended four day weekend.
The film's journey was nothing less than a thrilling ride though. The first day collections were a staggering 22 crores, hence creating a new opening day record while eclipsing the earlier record set by 'Bodyguard' less than six months ago. The film crashed in a big way on the very next day with a fall of 50%, hence sending shock waves in the industry. However just when it seemed that all predictions would fall flat and there won't be any redemption round the corner, the Hrithik Roshan starrer recovered on Saturday and then went on to record a very good Sunday, hence bringing the collections back to a very healthy number.
While Hrithik Roshan would be content that he has now enjoyed the biggest ever opening of his career and is all set to celebrate his first 100 crore earner in the running, it is yet to be seen that whether the film covers any greater distance than that. Reason being that word of mouth is largely mixed and even those who haven't seen Amitabh Bachchan's 'Agneepath' have diverse views. On the other hand bumper opening of the film has ensured that a 'hit' tag is already in it's kitty and a superhit could well be on the cards if weekdays stay on a decent note.
The film has an advantage of a relatively easy week ahead ('Gali Gali Chor Hai' is the sole competition) which means 'Don 2' record of 105 crores is all set to be beaten. However whether the film would surpass the 115 crore set by 'Ra. One' and 'Ghajini' would be decided only on the basis of how the weekdays perform.
